A resident of Bondi Beach recalled the harrowing moment he witnessed a shooting incident and described feeling that the assailants deserved the consequences. Jacob Barnfield was relaxing near North Bondi after a swim when he initially mistook gunshots for fireworks. As the situation unfolded, he realized the severity of the situation with multiple gunshots and people in distress.
Instead of fleeing, Barnfield bravely approached the danger to intervene and disarm the shooter. He described the chaotic scene with bodies on the ground and the intense atmosphere resembling a war zone. Despite his efforts to reach the shooter, someone else managed to subdue him before Barnfield could intervene.
After the shooters were neutralized by the police, Barnfield and others assisted in restraining them. He mentioned stepping on the head of one of the shooters, emphasizing the gravity of the situation and the actions taken to subdue the attackers.
Barnfield explained that his anger at witnessing the tragedy motivated him to confront the shooters and assist in their capture. He expressed no regrets for his actions, considering them justified given the circumstances.
The tragic incident at Bondi Beach resulted in the deaths of 15 individuals at a Hannukah event, including a 10-year-old girl named Matilda and Rabbi Eli Schlanger, a father of five. The gunmen were identified as Sajid Akram, 50, and his son Naveed, 24.
