“Branded By Collins Launches Hydronym Apparel for Lake Ontario Conservation”

A recent initiative has been launched to promote awareness and conservation efforts for Lake Ontario, inspired by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s use of the term “hydronym.” Branded By Collins, an apparel company based in London, Ont., has introduced T-shirts featuring the slogan, “My hydronyms are Lake & Ontario,” with a portion of the sales proceeds benefiting Swim Drink Fish Canada. This national charity, based in Toronto, aims to safeguard the lake and engage the community with its preservation.

Gregary Ford, the vice-president and waterkeeper of Swim Drink Fish Canada, expressed excitement about the newfound attention towards Lake Ontario, spurred by Carney’s response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s suggestion to rename the lake. The term “hydronym” refers to a body of water, sparking interest online due to its uncommon usage.

Lake Ontario, known as one of the Great Lakes, holds historical significance with its name originating from the Huron-Wendat word “oniatarí:io,” meaning “lake of shining waters.” The lake, which lies between Ontario and New York, has been a focal point of recent political discourse following Trump’s controversial executive order.

The T-shirt campaign by Branded By Collins, initiated in collaboration with Curious Public, signifies a patriotic gesture towards preserving Lake Ontario amidst ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada. The company’s managing director, Steve Ryall, emphasized the importance of supporting such environmental initiatives and fostering strong bilateral relationships.

The merchandise campaign, initially featuring hats and now expanded to include T-shirts, sweaters, and hoodies, offers various colors with a portion of the proceeds contributing to environmental advocacy. Despite the challenges posed by the executive order renaming Lake Ontario, Ford highlighted the renewed interest in protecting the lake and understanding its cultural significance and ecological importance.

Amidst environmental threats such as climate change and pollution, the campaign serves as a call to action to safeguard Lake Ontario and promote a deeper connection with this vital natural resource.
