Canadian astronaut Kutryk shares joy and challenges of ISS mission

Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk embarked on a six-month mission to the International Space Station (ISS) 11 days ago. During his first Q&A session from space on Tuesday, he expressed his enthusiasm for the experience, describing it as both challenging and rewarding.

Kutryk mentioned the adjustments he is making to life in space, highlighting the relearning of basic skills such as sleeping and using tools. Despite the initial frustrations, he finds joy and satisfaction in the unique experiences microgravity offers, emphasizing the privilege of being part of the mission.

Apart from adapting to space life, Kutryk has been actively engaged in scientific activities. He has already initiated experiments focusing on mental health and monitoring his vital signs.

This mission marks Kutryk’s debut in space, following closely after Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen’s recent participation in the Artemis II mission. Kutryk sees this as an opportunity for Canadians to embrace innovation and envision a promising future in space exploration.

As part of his journey, Kutryk is conducting various experiments, including the T-Bone study that utilizes 3D technology to investigate astronauts’ bone health. He emphasized Canada’s significant role in space exploration, highlighting the importance of continued innovation and leveraging the benefits of such missions to uphold the country’s strong legacy in space.

Throughout his time in space, Kutryk has witnessed stunning phenomena like the northern lights and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to observe his home country from a unique vantage point. He emphasized the importance of exercise and nutrition in maintaining astronaut health, underscoring the value of ongoing research in this area.

Kutryk’s mission serves as a testament to Canada’s capabilities in space endeavors, showcasing the nation’s collaboration with various sectors to drive innovation and technological advancements in space exploration.
