“US Trade Envoy Warns Canada Against Retaliation”

The U.S. trade envoy under Donald Trump’s administration has stated that any form of retaliation from Canada will not be accepted if the U.S. president proceeds with his latest tariff threat. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer emphasized that the intention behind the tariffs is to safeguard domestic supply chains rather than engage in a trade war, asserting that any country retaliating against the U.S. will face consequences.

Trade discussions between Canada and the U.S. have intensified following Trump’s warning to impose a substantial 50% tariff on numerous Canadian goods effective August 19. These tariffs would be in addition to existing sectoral levies. Greer, after holding several meetings with Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc, described the negotiations as productive and noted Canada’s preference for a conciliatory approach.

Industry insiders familiar with the trade talks have indicated that Canada views the August 19 deadline as crucial, suggesting that talks may cease if the tariffs are enforced. Greer emphasized the U.S.’ commitment to prioritizing American interests while expressing openness to aligning with Canada if mutually beneficial. Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney will soon receive options before the tariff deadline, with discussions focusing on addressing existing tariffs alongside the proposed 50% levy.

The U.S. has presented a new proposal to reduce certain sectoral tariffs, although not meeting Canada’s expectations. Trump’s tariff threat stemmed from concerns over provincial liquor bans, dairy quotas, and auto tariffs. While Canada is willing to address these issues, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet expressed skepticism about an imminent deal and urged the government not to compromise on dairy negotiations.

Greer highlighted various trade issues between the U.S. and Canada, particularly citing alcohol bans and retaliatory tariffs. Former Canadian ambassador to the U.S., Frank McKenna, challenged Greer’s stance, defending Canada’s right to retaliate against what it perceives as unfair and illegal measures imposed by the U.S.
