At the Pan Pacific championships in Irvine, California, Canadian swimmers Taylor Ruck and Summer McIntosh had contrasting results on Friday evening.
Ruck secured a silver medal in the women’s 100-meter butterfly event and later claimed bronze as part of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, marking her fourth and fifth medals of the competition. She achieved a personal-best time of 56.71 seconds in the 100m butterfly, finishing second to American swimmer Gretchen Walsh.
On the other hand, McIntosh, the 19-year-old from Toronto and current world-record holder, faced disappointment after failing to qualify for the A final in the women’s 400m freestyle event. She expressed frustration and took full responsibility for her performance, acknowledging her misjudgment in the morning heats.
Meanwhile, Blake Tierney and Ethan Ekk from Canada secured silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 200m backstroke event. Tierney won silver with a time of 1:56.29, while Ekk took bronze with a time of 1:56.85. Yumeki Kojima of Japan clinched the gold medal.
Ruck continued her success by leading Canada to a bronze medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay event. The Canadian women’s team, comprising Ruck, Mary-Sophie Harvey, Leah Tigert, and Leilani Fack, finished with a time of 3:36.44.
In the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay, the Canadian team narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth. The U.S. claimed gold, followed by Australia and Japan.
McIntosh will have a chance to bounce back in the upcoming 200m IM event, where she holds the world record and is a reigning champion. Overall, the Pan Pacific championships have been eventful for the Canadian swimmers, with both triumphs and setbacks shaping their performances.
