In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Ebola outbreak has claimed the lives of over 2,500 individuals, with the disease rapidly spreading across an area larger than France. United Nations Ebola co-ordinator Julien Harneis emphasized the urgent need for additional assistance as current funding is expected to run out soon. Harneis highlighted the challenges faced by health workers who are not only battling the outbreak but also encountering hostility from local communities, leading to attacks and fatalities among the workers.
Regarding the vaccine situation, a batch of doses for a previous Ebola strain has been dispatched to the D.R.C. Following the country’s request, 70,000 doses, including the Ervebo vaccine, were allocated. Out of these, 20,000 shots will be utilized in a late-stage trial to assess the vaccine’s effectiveness against the current Bundibugyo virus strain. The World Health Organization underscored the necessity for clinical trials to ascertain the vaccine’s potential protection against the Bundibugyo virus in humans.
The current outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo Ebola species, has become the largest in the D.R.C.’s history in terms of case numbers, surpassing the previous 2018-2020 outbreak. Harneis expressed grave concerns about the exponential growth of the epidemic, spreading rapidly in an area larger than France, outpacing the response efforts. The region’s longstanding conflict and extensive humanitarian needs further compound the challenges faced in controlling the outbreak.
Health officials disclosed that around 160 healthcare workers have contracted Ebola, resulting in 43 fatalities among them. Harneis lamented the additional risks faced by healthcare and frontline workers due to attacks from angry youths, who have targeted ambulances and healthcare facilities out of fear and misinformation. The prevalence of conspiracy theories and resistance to health measures has exacerbated the situation, leading to a rise in attacks on healthcare workers.
The critical shortage of aid, coupled with reduced capacity due to funding cuts in recent years, has strained humanitarian efforts. Furthermore, challenges in payment processes for the numerous individuals involved in combatting the outbreak have emerged following disruptions in banking services caused by the suspension of commercial flights.
