Mother of Three Killed by Stray Dog in NC

A mother of three tragically lost her life after taking in a stray dog that later attacked her own pet. Barbara Brewington, aged 38, was discovered by police in the backyard of her residence in Bonnetsville, North Carolina, on November 23. She had been caring for a stray mixed breed dog for about six months before it turned aggressive towards her smaller dog and then attacked her while she tried to intervene.

Despite the fatal incident, her pet survived the ordeal, while the stray dog was euthanized by a specialized animal control team on the scene. Barbara sustained severe injuries from the attack.

Sampson County Sheriff Jimmy Thornton reported that Ms. Brewington was found with serious injuries outside her home around 6:30 pm and passed away despite efforts by first responders to save her.

Sheriff Thornton mentioned to People magazine, “She had her own pet dog. And for some reason or another, the little dog got out. And she was trying to separate the stray dog from her pet. And apparently the dog got overly aggressive and attacked her.”

Barbara, who was married with three children and worked as a dental assistant at Village Family Dental, was able to rescue her smaller dog and bring it inside before collapsing. A GoFundMe page has been set up by her sister, Samantha, to support Barbara’s children, describing her as a loving and joyful person who was devoted to her family.

The fundraising page has raised over $24,700 towards a $26,000 target. Colleagues and classmates have expressed their condolences and shared memories of Barbara’s kindness and warmth. Online tributes have poured in for Barbara, with messages of support for her husband, Bradley, during this difficult time.
