A tragic incident unfolded as a man named Jesus Lato Garzon, aged 33, from Watford, fell to his death from a hot air balloon near Newpound Common, Wisborough Green, West Sussex. Garzon, described as a “much-loved son, family member, and friend,” was part of a Virgin Balloon flight with 16 others and a pilot from Billingshurst, West Sussex.
Despite being a former lifeguard, Garzon abruptly exited the balloon mid-air, waving at a camera in the basket before his fatal fall. His body was later discovered on farmland nearby with severe injuries, alongside a note indicating his intention to end his life by suicide.
During the inquest, it was revealed that Garzon had not raised any mental health concerns with his GP prior to the incident. The Coroner’s Court disclosed that despite a delayed departure due to foggy weather conditions, both the pilot and authorities had no initial worries about Garzon’s fitness to fly or the safety of the flight.
Detective Sergeant Elaine Keating detailed how Garzon suddenly left the balloon, leaving no chance for others to prevent his actions. Following the tragedy, a spokesperson from Virgin Balloon Flights expressed condolences to Garzon’s family and emphasized passenger well-being and privacy.
