A labor union representing 4,400 flight attendants at WestJet has issued a 72-hour strike notice, potentially leading to a strike amid the busy summer travel season. The Canadian Union of Public Employees stated that significant differences still exist between the two parties on crucial matters.
Alia Hussain, the chair of the union’s WestJet division, emphasized that the union has clearly outlined necessary changes and strived for a fair agreement. Hussain expressed hope for avoiding a strike by continuing negotiations tirelessly until a resolution is reached.
In response to the strike notice, WestJet announced a 72-hour lockout notice. The airline stressed its ongoing efforts to negotiate a settlement, expressing regret over the inconvenience caused to travelers. WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech highlighted the importance of preserving the network’s integrity and minimizing disruptions to guests, crew, and aircraft.
Although the union’s notice does not guarantee a strike, potential job action could commence as early as Sunday at 12:01 a.m. MT if an agreement is not reached. WestJet has allowed passengers flexibility, permitting changes or cancellations for flights scheduled between July 30 and Aug. 4 without fees.
In case of flight disruptions, impacted travelers will receive refunds or alternative arrangements, as appropriate. The airline also disclosed an agreement outlining procedures for grounding planes and assisting cabin crew in case of a work stoppage.
A primary concern for the union revolves around unpaid ground duties, contrasting with WestJet’s stance that all tasks are compensated through a credit hour system rather than hourly wages. The financial impact of a potential strike during the peak summer travel period is significant for WestJet, which operates over 600 daily flights carrying thousands of passengers.
McGill University’s aviation management instructor, John Gradek, highlighted the substantial financial losses a brief shutdown would incur on the airline. Despite the looming strike threat, WestJet is actively engaged in negotiations to avert disruptions and reach a mutually beneficial agreement.
