Miyu Yamashita had a triumphant debut in Canada, securing victory at the CPKC Women’s Open in Edmonton. The 25-year-old Japanese golfer clinched her fourth LPGA Tour win and second of the year with an impressive performance at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club. Her final round score of 4-under-par 66 propelled her to a total of 23 under in the $2.75-million US tournament, finishing a commanding nine strokes ahead of runner-up Yuri Yoshida.
Expressing her joy at the win, Yamashita remarked, “I’m really happy to win in Canada. A lot of people came out to support me, and I was able to enjoy playing throughout the week.” This victory marked her fastest ascent to four LPGA wins by a Japanese player, with her four-day score of 257 in Edmonton equalling the all-time lowest on the LPGA Tour.
Anna Huang from Vancouver shone as the top Canadian, finishing tied for fourth with a 5-under 65. Calgary’s Aphrodite Deng, the low amateur for the second consecutive year, concluded at 11 under with a final round of 69. Meanwhile, two-time winner Brooke Henderson finished tied for 13th at 7 under after a level par 70 in the closing round.
Reflecting on her performance, Huang shared, “To make a cut at any LPGA event is really special, and then to play so well as I did this week at the Canadian Open is just really, really awesome.” Both Huang and Deng’s top-10 finishes secured them entry into the LPGA’s FM Championship at TPC Boston in Massachusetts.
Despite a challenging tournament, world No. 1 Nelly Korda finished 1 under for the event. Henderson, facing difficulties with the rough, acknowledged the need for better putting to elevate her game. Michelle Xing, an amateur from Richmond Hill, finished 3 under, while other Canadian players wrapped up their performances at varying scores.
The 2027 CPKC Women’s Open is scheduled to take place at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club in Gatineau, Quebec.
