“Canadian Government to Scale Back Research Facility in Indian Head”

The Canadian government plans to gradually scale back activities at its research facility located in Indian Head, Saskatchewan, within the next year. The seed increase division is scheduled to be relocated to the Saskatoon Research and Development Centre by 2028. This move aims to facilitate a smooth transition, with operations expected to run at both sites during 2027.

The unit is responsible for producing and disseminating breeder seeds to authorized growers for reproduction and eventual sale as certified seed. This decision follows the recent agreement between federal and provincial authorities to preserve the Indian Head and Scott research farms, which were initially slated for closure along with five other research sites across the country.

Under the terms of the memorandum, the provincial government will assume ownership of the land as the federal government phases out its activities. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada emphasized its ongoing commitment to supporting the Canadian seed industry, meeting breeder seed demands, and maintaining the quality standards for pedigreed seeds.

The fate of the Indian Head and Scott research farms post the seed increase unit relocation remains uncertain. Provincial Agriculture Minister David Marit mentioned ongoing discussions with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada regarding the future of the remaining land at the Indian Head and Scott facilities. Furthermore, collaboration with the Saskatchewan agricultural sector is underway to devise a strategy for the research farmlands.
