After being involved in the Bondi Beach mass shooting, one of the gunmen, Naveed Akram, has regained consciousness following his hospitalization. Naveed, aged 24, was injured when he opened fire during a celebration of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah, with the incident resulting in a tragic loss of life.
Authorities in New South Wales have confirmed that Naveed is now conscious. His father, Sajid Akram, who was the second gunman, was fatally shot at the scene. The pair were seen firing shots from a footbridge as chaos unfolded among the fleeing crowd.
Naveed was wounded by law enforcement officers and subsequently hospitalized under police supervision while in a coma. Sajid was subdued by a courageous shopkeeper, Ahmed Al-Ahmed, who disarmed him at the cost of sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.
The tragic toll from the incident stands at 16 casualties, marking it as the second deadliest mass shooting in Australia. Additionally, 26 individuals are still receiving medical care in the aftermath of the violence.
Reports indicate that Naveed had been on the radar of New South Wales authorities, while his father legally owned six firearms. Furthermore, Naveed had faced previous scrutiny for alleged ties to Islamic State and had been under surveillance by Australia’s intelligence agency in 2019.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that assessments had been made regarding Naveed’s potential threats and concluded that there was no immediate danger posed by him.
Naveed, an Australian-born citizen with a passion for boxing, had sustained a wrist injury during the sport, necessitating time off work. His Islamic teacher publicly denounced the violent actions, highlighting that Naveed had previously demonstrated commitment to religious studies.
On the day of the tragic event, Naveed’s mother, Verena, recounted a conversation with her son where he described mundane activities before the shooting occurred.
