“Open Championship Organizers Address Potential Clash with World Cup Final”

The R&A may adjust their plans for the conclusion of The Open Championship to prevent a potential clash with the World Cup final. Scottie Scheffler is set to defend the Claret Jug at Royal Birkdale this summer, with the final round scheduled for Sunday, July 19, coinciding with the football tournament’s finale at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Fans are eagerly anticipating a day of sports viewing, but this scenario poses a challenge for Open organizers. Scheffler’s last round at Royal Portrush last year started at 2.25 pm and ended with his press conference at 8 pm, coinciding with the World Cup final kickoff time this year.

A playoff at Birkdale, where a record 300,000 spectators are expected, could lead to overlapping events and potential loss of viewers for the R&A, especially if England advances far in the tournament.

When questioned about the possibility of adjusting tee times, CEO Mark Darbon stated, “We are mindful of other events on that date. As the championship approaches, we will strive to avoid any clashes.”

The R&A has announced that the Open will return to Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2028 after a 16-year hiatus. Ernie Els was the last champion at this Lancashire course in 2012. Darbon expressed excitement about bringing the event back to Lytham after overcoming various challenges, emphasizing the course’s improvements over the years.
