Macklemore’s newly announced tour aimed at supporting Palestinians quickly sold out all three shows, as revealed by the artist. The tour, named the Free Palestine tour, includes October dates in Dublin, Paris, and London. Although the lineup for the shows has not been disclosed yet, the initial announcement mentioned that the performances would feature Macklemore “and friends,” with further details on the lineup expected to be revealed soon.
The American rapper announced the European tour after being removed as an opening act for Ed Sheeran’s U.S. tour. Expressing gratitude on Instagram, Macklemore stated that the rapid organization of the shows showcased the power of musicians standing in solidarity with Palestine to raise funds and demonstrate collective action.
The tour is set to benefit various Palestinian aid organizations, such as the Gaza Soup Kitchen, Palestinian Youth Movement, Jewish Voice for Peace, and UNRWA USA. Despite inquiries about potential Canadian shows, no response has been received from Macklemore’s representatives.
The decision to part ways with Ed Sheeran’s tour came after Macklemore faced pressure from venue owners in the U.S. threatening to cancel Sheeran’s shows if the rapper remained on the tour. Notably, comments from Robert Kraft, chairman and CEO of The Kraft Group, played a role in the decision-making process.
Macklemore, known for his pro-Palestinian stance over the years, has been vocal about his support for Palestine on various platforms. Following the controversy, all other openers, including Sheeran’s backing band, withdrew from the tour. Sheeran addressed the situation during a show in Philadelphia, emphasizing his intent not to be an activist musician.
The planned shows at Gillette Stadium were ultimately canceled due to severe weather conditions.
