“Controversy Over Grizzly Bear Euthanization in B.C.”

In a recent update, the B.C. Conservation Officer Service stated on August 14 that they had euthanized the mother grizzly due to concerns over public safety, as the animal had displayed food-conditioned behavior and a lack of fear towards humans. The two remaining yearlings were relocated to an undisclosed area for ongoing monitoring.

A demonstration was held in Nelson, B.C., on Thursday to voice opposition to the decision by the B.C. Conservation Officer Service to put down a young grizzly bear. This bear was part of one of two grizzly families that have gained widespread attention while moving in and around Nelson.

Katie Graves, the founder of the Ursa Project Society, described the rally as emotional, with attendees expressing sadness and offering support. Graves emphasized that the young grizzly, which had a leg injury or deformity, was capable of mobility, keeping pace with its family, and feeding.

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service defended their decision, citing the bear’s age, injury, and previous conflicts as factors that made rehabilitation or relocation unfeasible. The service acknowledged the difficulty of such decisions and emphasized the importance of public safety.

The Ursa Project Society highlighted that the mother bear had initially been relocated in 2023 but later returned with cubs. The fate of the other grizzlies — a sow and two yearlings — remains uncertain, with the Conservation Service yet to provide updates.

The incident has sparked community discussions, primarily critical of the bear’s euthanasia. Suggestions have been made to enhance garbage management practices to mitigate human-bear conflicts. The city of Nelson has affirmed its commitment to wildlife conservation by implementing measures like bear-resistant garbage cans and educational initiatives to minimize attractants and promote coexistence.
