Yukon’s South Klondike Highway has been partially reopened to traffic following a temporary closure due to rock slides between Carcross and the B.C. border. The highway was closed for nearly two days, but as of Thursday afternoon, it was accessible to drivers with single-lane alternating traffic and reduced speeds. Officials caution that the highway may close again unexpectedly.
Bailey Moreton from the Department of Highways and Public Works explained that a detour around the landslide area has been established to facilitate the flow of traffic. The current plan is to have the highway open from 1:30 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, with full daytime operation expected on Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., before closing overnight.
There remains a possibility of further closures due to slope stability concerns or adverse weather conditions. Drivers are advised to monitor updates on the 511Yukon website for the latest information. Theron Finley, a surficial geologist with the Yukon Geological Survey, investigated the slide area with a colleague to assess the situation and identify potential geological hazards.
Finley noted that the slides were likely triggered by heavy rainfall, resulting in debris flows reaching the highway. The steep terrain in the area makes it susceptible to such incidents, emphasizing the need for ongoing monitoring and mitigation efforts. Collaboration with government agencies is essential to address and reduce geological risks in the region.
