The Perseids are considered one of the best meteor showers due to the high number and brightness of the meteors. The peak viewing night is on Aug. 12-13, coinciding with a new moon, which means minimal interference from moonlight for observing faint meteors. The shower is anticipated to peak around midnight Eastern Daylight Time, potentially displaying up to 120 meteors per hour under ideal conditions. The radiant point of the meteors is in the Perseus constellation, though they can be seen streaking across the entire sky. In addition to the Perseid meteor shower, a partial solar eclipse is set to occur on Aug. 12, visible in Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and a small part of Portugal. While Canada won’t experience a total eclipse, observers can witness the moon partially obscuring the sun. It is crucial to use approved solar eclipse glasses for safe viewing of this celestial event.
