A woman from the UK is facing serious charges for her alleged involvement in a daring theft of valuable rare wines amounting to over £30,000. Natali Ray, residing in Herne Bay, Kent, has been accused of grand larceny, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, and defrauding an innkeeper. The charges were brought against her in Clark County General District Court in Virginia, where the prosecutor described the incident as a meticulously planned heist.
The accusations against Ray involve an attempt to steal fine vintage wine worth £31,500 from the L’Auberge Provencale winery. It is claimed that she created a distraction while an accomplice made off with the valuable bottles. Additionally, she is said to have posed as an assistant to a wealthy Canadian businesswoman using a fake identity to carry out the theft of six bottles of pinot noir from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti estate.
The stolen wine, highly sought after due to its limited production of only 5,000 bottles annually, carries a significant price tag in the market. CCTV footage captured a woman believed to be Ray engaging with the winery staff under false pretenses. The sommelier, Christian Borel, mentioned that the woman’s inquiries seemed innocuous at the time but later realized they were part of the ruse to steal the wine.
Despite Ray’s claims of being coerced into the crime by her accomplice whom she allegedly met during a cruise, she was apprehended at the scene of the theft. Held without bond at the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center, she is scheduled for a preliminary court hearing on February 11, 2026. If convicted, she could potentially face a lengthy prison sentence of up to 50 years.
Neighbors of Ray expressed shock at the allegations, describing the incident as completely out of character for her. The community shared concerns about her trusting nature and tendency to see the good in people, suggesting that it might have led her into this unfortunate situation.
